AIDS Project New Haven provides education, non-judgmental, comprehensive and holistic services to individuals infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Founded in 1983, AIDS Project New Haven is the oldest AIDS service organization in the state of Connecticut.
Our goals are to increase public awareness, promote prevention through educational programs and advocacy, and secure funding for the support services we provide for our clients.
AIDS Project New Haven's top accomplishments from the past year:
  • continued expansion of  our Caring Cuisine, home delivered meals program, to include individuals with chronic illnesses other than HIV/AIDS as well as a broader reach within the state of Connecticut.
  • addition of a Registered Dietician to our staff to implement a Medical Nutrition Therapy Program.
  • securing funding for an Early Intervention Services program to identify newly diagnosed individuals with HIV as well as those who have fallen out of care and get them into treatment and care.
  • Implementation of a MAC AIDS Fund/ANSA supported advocacy program, involving staff, clients, board members and other stake holders.
  • Increased numbers of volunteers to re-launch our Complimentary Alternative Therapies Program, specifically licensed massage therapist, acupuncturists, reike practicioners, yoga instructors and art therapists.
  • Capacity building around third party billing requirements to meet requirements for our federal Ryan White grant funds.
  • Increased unrestricted funding to meet the needs of tighter federal and state funding and increased costs.
  • Additional administrative staff support as funding for administrative functions has decreased across all grant sources.
  • An increase in short term cash availability to assist in managing cash flow as payment on state and federal funding has been well behind schedule.
CEO Statement AIDS Project New Haven is the oldest AIDS Service Organization in the state of Connecticut.  We assist our clients in empowering themselves to work through the many barriers they face in managing their healthcare and wellness.  This past year we have joined forces with the CT Department of Public Health to add an Early Intervention Services program to identify individuals living with HIV within the New Haven area who are unaware of their status or who have fallen out of care.  Individuals who are tested, aware of their status and in treatment are significantly less infectious compared with those living with HIV and unaware or not in treatment.  We continue to increase the reach of our Caring Cuisine Program by adding clients who are living with illnesses other than HIV, as the need is present and we prepare and home-deliver nutritious meals specific to the needs of each client. We have added a Registered Dietician to our staff this year and implemented a Medical Nutrition Therapy Program.  Our greatest challenge is navigating the changes in healthcare management and government funding.

Description Caring Cuisine is Connecticut's oldest, and longest running, meal delivery
program, and the only program that provides prepared meals
for individuals infected and affected with HIV/AIDS and other critical and chronic illnesses. Coming up on its 25ht anniversary in 2013, Caring Cuisine provides, at no charge, medically and culturally appropriate
prepared meals for both individuals infected and families affected by
HIV/AIDS, kidney failure, diabetes, hepatitis, cancer and other diseases, delivering seven full hot or frozen meals per person in addition to sufficient dietary staples (bread, canned goods, beverages, snacks, etc.) to make additional meals for every day of the week. Caring Cuisine serves patients referred from Greater New Haven's HIV/AIDS agencies, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, community health and dialysis centers, group homes and nursing programs. Most clients have multiple barriers to accessing or preparing the diet recommended to treat their conditions.

Caring Cuisine has been meeting the short-term goal of meeting the immediate medically prescribed nutritional needs of individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS and other critical and chronic illnesses, as well as alleviating hunger for the majority of these clients who live in poverty.  The program connects clients to other needed services, and attempts to increase the stability of the patient's living situation through the provision of a basic need.

Caring Cuisine’s nutritional intervention can help keep people in their homes, minimize hospital stays and reduce medical costs by meeting long-term goals which include: increasing a patient's ability to metabolize recommended nutrients and their medications; reducing side effects of HIV, hepatitis C and cancer treatments; reducing further disease progression; maintaining or increasing their current health status as measured in blood lab results, monitored activity levels, and self-reported sense of well-being.  The program also attempts to reduce through dietary intervention health deterioration from primary or co-occurring conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, renal failure and hyperlipidemia. The program promotes the use of preventive medicine (all clients are required to access primary medical care). Its pre-portioned, healthy prepared meals, combined with nutritional education, helps provide clients with the tools needed to make better, more informed nutritional choices.
Program Success Monitored ByHelpOrganizations describe the tools used to measure or track program impact. Caring Cuisine's outcomes measurement framework uses home visits, semi-annual nutritional update surveys and physician/lab reports to measure outcomes and to incorporate client feedback in the future development and implementation of the program.  Clients self-report on health and well-being (e.g., activities of daily living, etc.) during the update survey; physician/lab results focus on clinical  markers relevant the patient's condition (cd4 count, rna viral load, glucose, etc.).

Annually, 85% of clients receiving nutritional intervention demonstrate improved health outcomes.
Over 80% of families indicate that they would not be able to continue together living in the same household if they did not receive nutritional assistance from Caring Cuisine.
The majority of clients report eating much more healthily.
)ver half of individual recipients report feelings of increased safety and reduced isolation because of the frequence of meal delivery volunteer visits.
