What is a nonprofit profile?

Today’s donor wants easy, accessible information in order to make more informed decisions. In giveGreater.org you will find: General Information--contact information, mission, link to website; Programs--list and description of up to 5 programs; Management--staff and policy information; Governance--Board of Directors and planning information; Financial--three years of financial information in an easy to read format; Original documents--if available, the following documents will be available on giveGreater.org in a pdf format: IRS letter of nonprofit determination, Budget, IRS form 990 (nonprofit tax reporting form), audit or financial review. The information is provided on a voluntary basis by area nonprofits. The Community Foundation staff verifies some information (i.e. financial data is verified against the 990 and audit) at the same time, much of the data is self-reported. Profiles are updated annually.

Why are some nonprofits missing from giveGreater.org?

Unless otherwise specifically indicated, the presence of information on giveGreater.org regarding any nonprofit does not mean that The Community Foundation endorses or supports that organization. The information provided on each profile is provided by the nonprofit organization itself. The Community Foundation does not guarantee the accuracy of any such data or make any representations or warranties with regard to any organization profiled in this database. An organizational profile, as viewed or printed from this system, is not intended to be a user’s complete source of information regarding an organization. Rather, it can serve as a way for a user to initially screen an organization and decide if that organization warrants further examination. Whenever possible, The Community Foundation will provide explanation for any data discrepancies. If prospective donors have further questions about an organization, they may either contact the organization directly or contact The Community Foundation.

What standards should I look for when evaluating a nonprofit organization?

giveGreater.org® does not evaluate or rate nonprofits. When reviewing an organization's profile, you are encouraged to look at the whole picture. The Community Foundation has its own "Guiding Principles for Nonprofits: Leadership, Evaluation and Sound Management" which you may find helpful.

When will I receive the donations made on giveGreater.org®?

All gifts made through giveGreater.org are gifts to The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. Your organization will receive one check as a designated grant on a monthly basis. The grant amount will be the total of all gifts, net the applicable transaction and processing fees that are charged and assessed directly by the credit card company and payment processors. You also have access to a list containing all of the donors’ information as well. If donors are new to your organization, it is The Community Foundation’s hope that you develop relationships with these donors who have demonstrated support of your mission. If you need help with that work, please contact us.

Can I provide donors with goods and services in exchange for their donation through giveGreater.org?

No. It is important to note that 100% of the gift amount made on giveGreater.org is tax deductible.
giveGreater.org donors cannot accept gifts in exchange for which that donor will receive any item of monetary value or membership. The gift acknowledgement receipt provided to each donor indicates that the donor did not receive any goods or services were received in exchange for making the gift to your organization.
In addition, you should not send a separate and therefore duplicate gift acknowledgement to the donor. You can and we encourage you to send them a ‘thank you’ note for their gift, but this communication cannot serve as the official gift acknowledgement used by the donor for tax reporting purposes.
Some charitable organizations that will participate in giving incentives like the giveGreater.org 2010 Challenge have considered providing donors with a token of appreciation for their contributions. The Foundation has no problem with that provided that the token of appreciation for any donation received through our giveGreater.org 2010 Challenge web site is limited to a low-cost item that bears the organization’s name or logo (such as, a calendar, mug, or poster), and the cost of the items does not exceed $9.60. Here’s why:

The Internal Revenue Service has regulatory requirements that apply to such “quid pro quo” fundraising campaigns. Among the requirements is that the charity to which or through which the contribution is made, in this case the Foundation, must under certain circumstances disclose to the donor the value of the gift the donor received and how much of the donor’s contribution is deductible, unless what the donor received is a true token, such as a mug with a logo, valued at $9.60 or less (for 2010). The Foundation cannot put itself in a position of having to ascertain the nature and value of each participating organization’s appreciation gift and make the required disclosures to donors. Therefore, we need to establish this uniform rule as a condition of participation.

How do I record and account for donations made on giveGreater.org?

The Community Foundation will record the disbursement of funds to your organization as a designated grant. You should account and record the revenue as a grant from the Foundation on your organization’s books and financial records.

The gift you are making is 100% tax deductible, and is a gift to The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, and the acknowledgment will display our federal tax identification number.

Is The Community Foundation charging a fee for credit card donations?

The Community Foundation is not charging any fee to provide these services, however, there are fees charged by other unrelated vendors to process the transactions and make online giving possible. These external fees will be deducted from the gift amount before it is sent to the nonprofit. The fee is 2.75% of the total gift amount, plus $1.49 per transaction. The gift amount is 100% tax deductible.
Online giving is an efficient and cost effective way to make your gift, and we encourage you to contact us if you have questions about the fees charged by the outside vendors.
