Mission The mission of the Fresh Air Fund is to provide outdoor camping experiences for underprivileged children in Greater New Haven.
Background

The New Haven Register Fresh Air Fund was established in 1905 by the Jackson family, then-owners of the New Haven Register. Since then, the fund has sent more than 35,000 underprivileged area children to camp. The mission of the Fresh Air Fund is to provide outdoor camping experiences for underprivileged children in Greater New Haven. The Fund has a long, distinguished history and is one of the area’s oldest, most-respected charities. In 1997, the Fresh Air Fund was honored with the Clifford W. Beers “Kids Are Our Business” award in recognition of a tradition of dedication to ensure the well-being of children in the community.

Impact

The Register Fresh Air Fund would like to continue increasing the support to the Greater New Haven Area children along with support for an additional camp. This year we have received an application for a new camp to support – New Haven Ecology Project, Inc. The New Haven Ecology Project, Inc. meets the Register Fresh Air Fund requirements and provides children farm and nature based camp where children can garden, care for animals, go hiking and more. Currently we do not have enough funds to support them this year. We also received request for an existing camp, Camp Totokett to receive more funds as their needs continue to grow to support more children.

Needs

Our goal is to continue bring awareness to the community that there is an immediate need to help children. The Register Fresh Air Fund is hoping to support New Haven Ecology Project, Inc. and increase donations to our existing partnering camps. All the camps submit a report at the end of the season along with copies of the applications of the children who received assistance. Our success is measured in how many children we are able to support this year. Board members are actively working throughout the year to sustain support for the Fund. Contributions are sought from New Haven Register readers from Memorial Day through Labor Day each year.

Nurture Children & Youth

When families, schools and communities take the view that children and youth are valued and respected assets to society, they necessarily support environments that nurture youth development. Children raised to embrace positive social values, to seek self-understanding, and to value their self-worth grow to become community-minded young adults with a sense of belonging and a belief in their resiliency.
