The Salvation Army's mission is to meet basic human needs without discrimination and its ministry is motivated by the love of God. The Salvation Army's goal is to help individuals and families deal with the many challenges they face in their daily lives through social, educational, emotional and spiritual development. Every program and service is designed to support and develop self-sufficiency and hope.

The Salvation Army has a history of providing targeted services to Connecticut and Rhode Island through its Southern New England Division’s operations, in this case through the Milford Service Unit. In order to provide services, when individuals or families reach out to The Salvation Army’s Milford Service Unit, a volunteer member of the service unit, referred to as a Community Service Representative, will interview them, with careful research into each client’s situation and available resources. Next, clients are informed of their options and other potential available resources, then provided with vouchers for food and clothing, or a voucher to pay a vendor for rent/utilities assistance. Occasionally, clients may also be referred to other local services and/or to The Salvation Army’s regional services, such as an Adult Rehabilitation Center for those with addiction problems, one of The Salvation Army’s homeless shelters for families, single women or men, or summer programs such as The Salvation Army’s Camp CONNRI, which is offered to young children and older adults throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island. A back-to-school program is also available to provide boots, shoes and backpacks to children.

Background William Booth founded The Salvation Army in 1865. Booth, a Methodist minister, began a crusade of helping the hungry and homeless who wandered the streets of London, England. Booth recognized that people could not consider or address their spiritual well being if their basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter were not met. Today, more than one hundred and forty years later, Booth's mission lives on through the work of The Salvation Army.

Today, The Salvation Army serves people in 127 countries throughout the world.  Booth had instituted a welfare program that continues today as a practical expression of the dominating spiritual motivation of The Salvation Army.  Aid is given wherever and whenever the need is apparent, without distinction to race or creed.

The Salvation Army is in the business of meeting needs and changing lives, one life at a time. Therefore, The Salvation Army doesn’t just suddenly appear at Christmastime; instead, its programs and social services are available in local communities 365 days a year and include: providing food and shelter for the homeless; emergency food pantry assistance; utilities assistance; after school programs; seniors programs; life enhancement skills; employment skills and placement; emergency disaster relief; and counseling, to name a few.
Impact

During the past program year, the Milford Service Unit provided 52 households, encompassing 132 people, with assistance with housing, utilities, medical expenses, and other emergency needs. Additionally, we distributed 10 car seats to families and 288 back to school backpacks for school-aged children.

The Salvation Army's Milford Service Unit strives to holistically address the unique emergency needs of individuals and families residing in Milford.

Needs The most significant needs we see among those we serve are the need for energy assistance and also boots, shoes, and backpacks for school-age children.

Since the caring volunteers come from the community they serve, they are sensitive to the needs of those less fortunate from their own community. This connection allows The Salvation Army to be a vibrant part of this area.

The Salvation Army assists those in need and is often the only available source of help for the working poor, those who do not qualify for other forms of assistance due to exceeding income thresholds.

Description The Milford Service Unit assists individuals and families residing in Milford who are experiencing a short-term, temporary crisis.  Depending on each household's unique needs, we may provide assistance with emergency food, clothing, gasoline, rent and energy assistance, back-to-school shoes, boots, and backpacks, medical/dental examinations, immunizations, prescriptions, and equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, dentures, eyeglasses, and hearing aids. For those whose needs go beyond a short-term temporary crisis, we provide referrals to other social service agencies in the area.

A family of four has fallen behind on their electric bill. Through The Salvation Army's Community Service Representative, they are able to make a payment on their bill, which allows them to be accepted to a matching payment program with the electric company. In the end, they are able to keep their electricity on and avoid a shut off. This in turn improved their credit, which allowed them to refinance some other bills, and thus avoid having to apply for state assistance or rely on additional social services assistance agencies.
Description Each year, The Salvation Army’s Milford Service Unit assists hundreds of Milford children by providing them with backpacks filled with vouchers to purchase boots and shoes and back-to-school supplies, which are distributed through the town's Youth and Social Services Department. As a result, children are better-prepared for school, reducing stress on the family and freeing up other funds to meet other needs.

Collaborations
We are proud of our four-year collaborative relationship with the Kiwanis Club's Keeping Milford Warm program. This program raises funds to support families who need emergency heating oil. The program also pays gas and electric bills for those families who heat by gas or electricity.

We also utilize the Santa Energy/Fuel Company in Bridgeport as a referral resource to deliver 100 gallons on the same day or next day when a need arises for a family. A check is sent directly to Santa Energy/Fuel on an as-needed basis so that funds can be drawn down to pay for the oil.

When a family is referred to or calls the Service Unit seeking assistance with a gas or electric bill, the bill is scanned and sent to the Keeping Milford Warm Executive Director who then makes payment directly to the appropriate source.

As a result of our partnership with Keeping Milford Warm over the past four years, we have been able to assist more people, redirecting funds that would otherwise have been spent on energy assistance to other needs in the Milford community.


























Comments
CEO Comments  The Milford Salvation Army Service Unit's most significant challenge is the continued need for gift cards for groceries. Many families have needs at the end of the month when their SNAP benefits have been exhausted and they don't have adequate food to sustain their family. While food pantries are available in Milford, they often do not have adequate resources or the diversity of foods that some people need, particularly those with dietary or medical restrictions. Additionally, some clients are unable to get to the local food bank or church pantries during operating hours due to scheduling conflicts. As a result, an increase in the amount of food gift cards available to The Salvation Army's Milford Service Unit would be most helpful.
