Background

In the past 3 years Executive Director Mubarakah Ibrahim has worked with hundred of women to reduce their weight through exercise and nutrition. These programs have an 80% success rate by combining evidence-based fitness programs and healthy nutritional habits and accountability. We attribute our success rate to the following factors: incorporation of a model that emphasizes both diet and physical activity, provision of appropriate social support, making sure the interventions are culturally relevant, and lacing high expectations on participants. In addition, the use of group sessions (which are an effective model of behavior change because of the efficient use of staff, group dynamics peer pressure, and consistency in the delivery of messages to participants) combined with individual meetings with participants (where participants’ individual areas of weakness such as the lack of goal setting or problem solving skills were addressed) led to more enthusiastic program participation.

Impact
Women

The latest 2013 survey by CARE reports in Dixwell/Newhallville 71% of residents are overweight or obese and preventable diseases such as diabetes and heart disease far exceeds both Connecticut and the National average.

Girls

Today's youth are believed to be the most physically inactive generation in United States history. The number of overweight children in our country has doubled in the past two decades. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicts that one in three children born in 2000 in the United States will likely develop Type 2 Diabetes unless they get more exercise and improve their diets.

As a new organization we are in need of start up equipment and capital to open our doors by October 2014. Those donations can be given in the form of specific category donations or sponsoring a low-income woman or girl to be a member for one year. We will have the capacity to accommodate 1000 women and girls in programs and classes.

Board Chair Statement

The Vision, mission and values of the Executive Director and Fit Haven align closely with my own zealousness for a healthy lifestyle. Becoming passionate about exercise and fitness in my early 20’s I became a self proclaimed “gym rat”. Falling in love with exercise and the benefits that came along with it. In addition to the physical physique that I worked to obtain , I soon realized other benefits that came as with the work out such as decreased stress levels, positive mood changes and a increase in mental focus. These changes sparked a interest that lead me to read and investigate more on exercise, supplements, and nutrition. I soon became the unofficial authority on fitness amongst my family, friends, and peers. Developing exercise regiments and dietary plans for myself I soon began to assist family members with who had diagnosis of hypertension, type II diabetes, and cardiac issues. I began creating exercise and diet programs for their treatment plans given by their doctors, this eventually evolved into requested to accompany them on some of visits to the doctor to be their liaison into the fitness/healthy way of life. What I began to notice is that most of these family members , neighbors, etc were women, Women who worked very hard and sometimes long hours while at the same time running a household an in some cases as a single parent. This lead me to study and ready up on health related issues in the African American /ethnic community as they related to women being that I come from a single woman parent household. Noticing that many women were not comfortable with a gym/ fitness center or some just not being able to afford the facilities I would take them on walks on the neighbor fields and tracks or sometimes just in their neighborhood.

Seeing that my input made positive changes I eventually turned this passion into a career. First enrolling into The Swedish Institute Of the Health Sciences in NYC to study massage therapy including asian modalities. From there becoming certified as personal trainer with the NASM (National Academy Of Sports Medicine) organization. Soon after enrolling in The Integrative Institute of Nutrition to broaden my understand and practice the importance of a allied healthy lifestyle. I became a freelancer in addition to working in a gym, I always had an interest in those clients who suffered from preventable lifestyle diseases and issues, due to my prior experience, And so I practiced with a passion the importance of whole foods, proper nutrition and physical activity and the positive impacts that they had on physical health and our overall well being.

Its with the same passion and exuberance that I support the founder/Executive Director and The Fit Haven organization in its efforts and vision in “creating a healthy world one woman at a time”
